Crossing the Sea

It so happened that after Pharaoh released the people, God didn’t lead them by the road through the land of the Philistines, which was the shortest route, for God thought, “If the people encounter war, they’ll change their minds and go back to Egypt.” So God led the people on the wilderness road, looping around to the Red Sea...

God went ahead of them in a Pillar of Cloud during the day to guide them on the way, and at night in a Pillar of Fire to give them light; thus they could travel both day and night. The Pillar of Cloud by day and the Pillar of Fire by night never left the people...

...When the king of Egypt was told that the people were gone, he and his servants changed their minds. They said, “What have we done, letting Israel, our slave labor, go free?” So he had his chariots harnessed up and got his army together. He took six hundred of his best chariots, with the rest of the Egyptian chariots and their drivers coming along...

...The angel of God that had been leading the camp of Israel now shifted and got behind them. And the Pillar of Cloud that had been in front also shifted to the rear. The Cloud was now between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel. The Cloud enshrouded one camp in darkness and flooded the other with light. The two camps didn’t come near each other all night.

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and God, with a terrific east wind all night long, made the sea go back. He made the sea dry ground. The seawaters split.

MUSIC NOTE

Today we hear from Albert Diaz, of the music department, and Schuan Carpenter, who leads the praise band. Please join me in thanking both of these musicians.

Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) based the organ postlude on a German hymn familiar to him but lesser known to our congregation; this melody, in slow notes, appears in the pedal. Albert Diaz bases the guitar anthem on Hymn No. 21, “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise.” The offertory, by the Serbian-born American composer and classical guitarist Dusan Bogdanovic (b. 1955), presents a beautiful movement from his important work entitled Polyrhythmic and Polymetric Studies for Guitar (1990). This piece casts together two melodic lines in distinct time signatures, one in 3 / 16 the other in 1 / 4. This is the type of musical game often played by great composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Johannes Brahms. Like them, Bogdanovic negotiates the cerebral puzzle and still produces beautiful music.

As you prepare your heart to worship God, I invite you to meditate on the hymns we sing or on the anthem hymn mentioned above.

GIVE

Thank you for your generosity to the ministry of the University Church. The following graphics highlight how donations to the University Church budget and donations marked "tithe" are allocated. Thank you for your generous support!

On Monday, August 20, Rogers Adventist School and Walla Walla Valley Academy (WWVA) will begin their 2018–19 school years. Each of these schools are ministry partners of the University Church, but they are far more as well. Our church's mission is to teach people how to follow Jesus. Education is the key strategy for how we have chosen to accomplish that in our context.
The University Church's budget  in 2018 is $835,716. Close to 30% of that is designated as subsidies for Rogers' and WWVA's operating budgets. These earmarked funds are in addition to several tens of thousands of dollars donated every year by church members for student aid, a special account kept in reserve for helping families in need to pay tuition.
Your gifts to the University Church budget are essential to the ongoing ministry of education our community believes in so enthusiastically. Thank you for your generosity, and also for your earnest prayers for the staff & students of Rogers and WWVA as they begin this school year!

To donate to the University Church budget, mark your tithe envelope as such or give Online here. Our online giving portal allows any person to set up regular, monthly, weekly, or biweekly contributions to be deducted automatically from their connected accounts into whatever budget, ministry, or funds they choose.

The Sanctuary roof is being replaced over the remainder of July and much of August. During this time, two construction companies will be working in, on, and around the church facility. Please be aware that coned-off zones on the outside of the building indicate areas of danger. In particular, they may indicate an overhead hazard that is not otherwise obvious. Please keep clear of these areas (especially children) and remain mindful of the ongoing construction during this time. Pictures of the progress are below:
