THIS SABBATH
AT THE UNIVERSITY CHURCH
WORSHIP NOTE
We thank our own Sam Derting who shares his singing talent on this Memorial Day weekend. The offertory anthem sets the words of Martha. Three days after the death of Lazarus Jesus had a conversation with Martha, saying, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” Martha’s reply forms the text of the anthem:
"Lord, I believe that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into the world." -John 11:27
Camille Saint-Saëns (1835–1921) set these words when only twenty-three years old. This aria forms part of his Christmas Oratorio.
The French organist Nicolas de Grigny (1672–1703) wrote our organ music. While we remember, on this Memorial Day weekend, those who died while serving in the armed forces, it is always appropriate also to remember brilliant artists who died far too soon.
-Kraig Scott
