MUSIC NOTE
Working with students and hearing them grow into wonderful musicians constitutes a primary joy of life on this campus. Today we welcome four young musicians in this mold, please join in thanking them all.
Brandon Rittenour, a junior from Spokane plays cello. We also hear from a trio of local students – Hannah Schafer violin,
Sophie Naden-Johns cello, and Tobin Kearns, piano. On this Sabbath prior to Thanksgiving we give thanks to them for sharing their music.
The anthem presents an instrumental arrangement of
Carl F. Mueller’s (1892-1982) well-known setting of Psalm
51:10-13.
Create in me a clean heart, O God;
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Thy presence;
and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation;
and uphold me with Thy free spirit.
Then will I teach transgressors Thy ways;
and sinners shall be converted unto Thee.
In the offertory we hear an arrangement of “Jesus, Lover of My Soul.” This text occurs twice in our hymnal (No.489 and No.490) but for this arrangement Evelyn Larter (b.1953) uses the Welsh tune ABERYSTWYTH (No.593). Ms. Larter was born in Glasgow and moved to Philadelphia in 1988 where she is active as a pianist, organist, church musician, and composer.
As you prepare your heart to worship God I invite you to meditate silently on the words of one of these hymns or on those of one we sing together.
-Kraig Scott
