Fiery-Furnace.jpg

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

Isaiah 43:2

MUSIC NOTE

We thank our own Jeremy Irland for sharing his music with us. In addition to his busy performing career, Jeremy teaches voice in the WWU music department and music in the Prescott School District.

Daniel chapter four ends with a revelation – the Son of God walking unhurt in the fiery furnace. Our offertory and closing hymn focus on this Theophany. But prior to this resolution, fire forms the focal point of the chapter. Fire can destroy, purge, purify, and reveal. Most of our music focuses on one or another of these aspects. The anthem, a setting of Jeremiah 23:29 and Psalm 7:11-12 from Felix Mendelssohn’s (1809-1847) famous oratorio Elijah, uses the metaphor of fire to describe God’s judgment. In the postlude we hear God’s majestic purifying fire; this is the second movement of Naji Hakim’s (b.1955) large-scale work. The prelude presents a poem by James Joyce (1882-1941) set by the American composer Samuel Barber (1910-1981). This poem’s use of fire perhaps most closely resembles that in Daniel 4 – an arrogant, dominating army seeks to burn and terrify all who oppose them. As you prepare your heart to worship God, I invite you to meditate on the words of our hymns or the text of the prelude, given here.

I hear an army charging upon the land,
And the thunder of horses plunging, foam about their knees: Arrogant, in black armour, behind them stand,
Disdaining the reins, with flutt’ring whips, the charioteers.

They cry unto the night their battlename:
I moan in sleep when I hear afar their whirling laughter.
They cleave the gloom of dreams, a blinding flame
Clanging, clanging upon the heart as upon an anvil.

They come shaking in triumph their long, green hair:
They come out of the sea and run shouting by the shore.
My heart, have you no wisdom thus to despair?
My love, my love, why have you left me alone?

-Kraig Scott

This Thanksgiving week, a WWU graduate student will film a beautiful and impactful short film about loving our neighbors; and that we’re all the same on the inside, no matter the color of our skin, or the country where we were born. Many film crew members will be from out of town, and housing budget is limited. If you know someone who could house a few crew members to help us tell this story, we’d love to have your help. Please contact rachel.scribner@wallawalla.edu with any housing ideas, or for information about getting involved with the film.
