During the summer of 2019, the University Church community will enjoy weekly sermons based on selections from the book of Psalms. As a part of this series, we will also hear extended passages from the Psalms recited by church members from memory.

If you would be willing to memorize one chapter to share with the church family over the summer, are interested in learning more about the process, or know someone who’d be a perfect participant, please contact Pastor Kris: kris.loewen@wallawalla.edu.

MUSIC NOTE

We thank two gentlemen for making music today. Ron Coleman has long flown airplanes all over the world. We are glad that his schedule has him at home more now than in the past, and his proximity allows him to teach more in the music department and perform more here at the University Church. Several years ago, Gary Peter moved from Bakersfield, California to our valley and he quickly became a welcome addition to the ranks of local keyboard artists. He serves as the organist at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Walla Walla. Please join me in thanking both Ron and Gary for sharing their music with us.

The prelude presents the favorite hymn, “Be Thou My Vision” (No.547) by the American composer Franklin Ashdown (b.1942). Heinrich Baermann (1784–1847), the great German clarinet virtuoso of the early nineteenth century, received compositions from all the great composers of the day. He also wrote a small number of works some of which are still in the standard repertoire, most notably the adagio we hear today. In what can be taken as a great compliment, this adagio was attributed for many years to Richard Wagner. In the postlude we hear the famous final movement of Exultate Jubilate by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1770–1791).

As you prepare your heart to worship please meditate silently on the text of Hymn No.547 mentioned above, or on one of those we sing.

-Kraig Scott
