FAMILY GROUPS 2019
WWU’s Campus Ministries theme for the school year is “Connections Matter.” Lead Chaplain Albert Handal and his team invite University Church members to join them in connecting deeply with students on campus, many of whom would love (and need!) intergenerational fellowship and community. This January, Campus Ministries is launching a new type of small group called Family Groups. These consist of a family (or two or three) opening up their home(s) once a week or so to a group of college students to connect as a family and grow together in faith. If you are interested in starting such a group, or already have one going, please contact the chaplain's office at 509.527.2010 or email small.groups@wallawalla.edu early during the week of January 7-10. Student signups begin January 11.

THIS SABBATH
AT THE UNIVERSITY CHURCH
MUSIC NOTE
Welcome to the University Church, and Merry Christmas! No doubt we have all enjoyed singing The Twelve Days of Christmas, but this is more than a fun carol with silly words. This song, which dates from at least 1780, reflects the fact that the Christmas Season runs a full twelve days, 25 December to 5 January. That makes today the twelfth, and final, day of Christmas and tonight the Twelfth Night, made famous from a Shakespeare play of the same name. Tomorrow begins the season of Epiphany (a sudden appearance or manifestation) with the revelation of Christ to the gentiles as represented by the wise men visiting baby Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh (Matthew 2:1–11). Thus we shouldn’t really sing Hymn No.137 “We Three Kings” until tomorrow, just as we should wait to sing “Silent Night” until after dark on 24 December. In like manner, the four weeks of Advent that precede Christmas provide the appropriate time to sing “O Come, O Come, Immanuel” (Hymn No.115) and other carols looking forward to Christ’s coming.
I find a particular beauty in attending to these various seasons. When we romanticize Christmas it is easier to take down the decorations as soon as the presents are unwrapped. Too easily we forget that Christ really was a baby, dependent on the constant care of Mary and Joseph. For instance, if Christ were born on December 25, he would have been circumcised and named last Tuesday — his eighth day and New Year’s day (Luke 2:21); and three weeks from now, on 26 January, Mary and Joseph would take him to the temple to present him to the Lord (Luke 2:22-38) where they would encounter Simeon and Anna. I find great power walking with Jesus in real time rather than just on Sabbath, or Christmas Eve. These seasons of the Christian liturgical year date back to early Christian times. But the idea of a divine liturgical calendar began far earlier as recorded in Leviticus 23.
Our music today reflects on a Christ child only twelve days old. Among other things we hear a Noel, we sing “Away in a Manger” and we hear a lullaby composed by Richard Strauss. Please join me in thanking three of our own musicians, Albert Diaz, Amy Dodds, and Benjamin Gish for sharing their music. And thank you for preparing your heart to worship God by meditating on our hymn texts or the biblical passages cited above.

WWU’s Campus Ministries theme for the year is “Connections Matter.” We would like to invite you to join us in connecting through a new experiment called “Family Groups.” There are many of our students that would love (and need!) intergenerational connection and fellowship. This January, we are launching a new type of small group called Family Groups. A Family Group consists of a family (or two or three) opening up their home once a week to some college students to connect as a family and grow together in faith. Studies show that winter quarter can be one of the hardest times for our students in the areas of relationships, mental health, and remaining spiritually engaged. Whether it's gloomy weather or just gloomy feelings, or both, winter is a tough time for our campus. Hosting a Family Group is a wonderful way to make progress against those barriers to connection. Many University Church members are already doing something like this, but there might be a few others that would like to try. Here's your chance to take part in what promises to be a transformative experience. Please see the attached document for answers to more questions you might have. The first Friday night of winter quarter at vespers (January 11), WWU Chaplain Albert Handal will be preaching and making an appeal for students to sign up for a group at the end of the sermon. WWU Campus Ministries would love to have your name as a part of the options for students to get connected. If you're interested, please contact Campus Ministries as soon as possible at: small.groups@wallawalla.edu. Also, they will be doing a training session for all new Family Group hosts on Sunday, January 13th.
The Winter Quarter pulpit series at the University Church is entitled “Wise Guys.” Each Sabbath, a variety of preachers from our community (including our new senior pastor Andreas Beccai) will open the scriptures sharing from the wisdom literature books of: Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, Job, and Song of Solomon.
Walla Walla University will host a free online webinar for prospective students and their parents titled “How to Pay for College” on Wednesday, January 9, at 4pm and 7pm. This 40-minute presentation will be led by experts from WWU Student Financial Services, and Marketing and Enrollment Services. After the presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions. Register at: sfs.wallawalla.edu/webinars.
Please consider contributing to WWU Student Week of Worship, January 14-19, 2019 by sharing your plants! ASWWU needs your help! During week of worship, the sanctuary will be decoarted with many plants to reflect the theme, “Seasons.” Would you be willing to let ASWWU babysit one of your plants for a week? We will feed and water it as you wish! Please contact Lindsey Haffner at 937.657.9441 to help.
A church member is seeking a female live-in caregiver to care for her 93-year-old mother who has a broken hip and early-stage dementia. Caregiving responsibilities would be daily from 6pm-8am. Payment will include room and board as well as wages depending on experience. If you are interested in this position, please contact Lou at 515.238.5497.
The students of Milton–Stateline Adventist School are collecting donations to help Paradise Adventist Academy. Their goal is $2,000 to help pay the tuition of students whose parents lost their jobs.
