“Whenever any sorrow is taken fully to heart we learn something profound. A window opens where a door closed. The soul expands. Assumptions about ourselves are shed. We become naked to actual experience, and therefore more joined to the world.”

MUSIC NOTE
We thank Matt Heinrich of the University Bookstore, who leads the praise band. We also thank Hannah and Samuel Schafer for sharing their music. Hannah, who has played for us many times, studies with Julia Salerno and Samuel with Maya Takemoto. Both of them attend Washington Virtual Academy where Hannah is a senior and Samuel is a sophomore. Finally, I am grateful for the musical offerings of two more musicians—Jaci Solís, our newest pastor, and Christopher Salvador, a WWU junior—who provide a special musical contribution during the sermon.
The postlude presents a composition by the great Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) so distinctive and singular that some commentators question its authenticity. In no tore composition does Bach remain so strict in texture and uniform in simplicity. Such treatment is, however, consistent with the text of the chorale, a paraphrase of Psalm 51. Even today, German composers fdtend to provide few or no suggestions for registration, leaving the performer free to experiment. This chorale prelude, for example, can be registered quietly, loudly, or in a grand crescendo; I think these approaches produce strikingly different impacts. As you prepare your heart to worship I invite you to silently meditate on the words of Psalm 88 or on those of Psalm 51, some of which are given here in the chorale paraphrase used by Bach.
Be merciful to me, O Lord God.
-Kraig Scott
