Holy and Great Thursday. Washing the feet of the Apostles. Early 14th c. Fresco in Vatopedi Monastery, Mt. Athos.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
If I settle on the far side of the sea,

Even there your hand will guide me,
Your right hand will hold me fast.

Psalm 139:7–10

MUSIC NOTE

We thank several members of our congregation for sharing their music. Sam Derting leads the praise band. A graduate of the WWU music department, Sam has worked at several secondary schools; we are thrilled that now he works right here at College Place High School. Cliff Dolph, of the English faculty at Walla Walla Valley Academy, serves as our guest organist. In addition to his language degrees, while a WWC student Cliff studied organ very seriously. After graduating from WWU in music Joel Dickerson took a Master’s degree in engineering at Berkeley. He continues to operate his Napa Valley engineering firm, now with an office also in Walla Walla. We are thrilled to have Joel back home in our valley. As the long-term director of the renowned Walla Walla Valley Academy orchestra, Benjamin Gish needs no introduction to our congregation. It is always a special Sabbath when we get to hear his music. During outdoor foot washing Benjamin will be joined by a new musician in our valley – Amanda Kitto, a junior at WWVA, who just moved to Walla Walla this summer from the area of California ravaged by fire last November. Amanda is scheduled to make more music for us next Sabbath. Please join me in welcoming and thanking all of these musicians.

In the prelude Joel presents his own take on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Rêverie, Op.9 No.1. During the prelude, and as you prepare your heart to worship God, I invite you to meditate on the words of a favorite hymn, No.100, some of which are given here.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside.
Great is Thy faithfulness!

-Kraig Scott

Today, the loose offering goes toward the University Church budget. Aside from pastors’ salaries, which are funded by donations marked “tithe,” the University Church budget funds all local ministries including Youth and Children, WWVA and Rogers subsidies, broadcast, worship, and the upkeep of our facility.
