MUSIC NOTE
Please join me in welcoming our many musicians. Our own
Bethany Foster serves as guest organist. Today marks the first time this year that we get to hear the Walla Walla University Wind Symphony. It is always a high Sabbath when the many students and community members of this ensemble, under the direction of Brandon Beck, share their music. Please join me thanking all of these musicians.
Much of the music is based on hymns. The anthem presents the tune of an English traditional melody called O WALY WALY; it appears in our hymnal as No.397. The offertory provides a clear example of the dual life of hymns – the career of a hymn text is often quite distinct from that of the tune. This text appears in our hymnal as Hymn No.197, but in the offertory we hear the tune ST. COLUMBA, Hymn No.639, which is just as often sung to these words. Dan Forrest (b.1978) composed today’s arrangement as a choral piece; one of his students, Jess Langston Turner (b.1983), made the transcription for band.
The postlude, by James Curnow (b.1943), is based on two hymns,
“All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” (No.229) and the familiar “We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations,” not found in our hymnal. As you prepare your heart to worship God I invite you to quietly meditate on the words of these hymns.

GIVE
Thank you for your generosity to the local ministry of the University Church as well as to the global mission of the Adventist Church. The Annual Sacrifice Offering is a good time to make a special gift to support the work of Global Mission Pioneers. Part of your Promise (regular and systematic offering) already supports the Global Mission Pioneers, but if in addition you would like to help share Jesus with unreached people, write “Annual Sacrifice Offering” on your tithe envelope.
